Travelling with Pets

Travelling with pets or service animals requires a little extra planning. Follow these steps to make sure Fido or Fluffy get to their destination.

1. Visit the vet first. Your pet or service animal should have all its vaccinations well before the flight. Get written proof and a certificate of good health signed by your veterinarian.

2. Take several short trips with your pet in order to get him or her used to the travel carrier. If your pet continues to be agitated, ask your vet about tranquilizers.

2. Check regulations. When making your travel plans, consult the airline, the hotel and, if necessary, the consulate about regulations on traveling with pets or service animals.

3. Make reservations as soon as possible. Accommodations for pets may be extremely limited. Also don’t let your pet fly in very hot or cold weather.

4. Get proper identification. Make sure your pet is wearing identification tags with his or her name, your name, your address and phone number.

5. Clearly mark all your pet’s belongings. All bags should have your name, address and phone numbers as well as those of an emergency contact.

6. Pack more than necessary, including water and food, a water bowl, a feeding bowl, a leash, a sleeping pad, toys and any medicines, such as flea sprays.

7. Don’t feed your pet for several hours before the flight, to prevent motion sickness. Wait at least one hour after the trip to feed your pet.

8. Put your pet in a secure carrier that is well-ventilated. Place a blanket or pillow that he or she is familiar with inside the carrier. Stay with your pet and talk to him or her frequently in order to provide comfort.

9. Exercise your pet frequently. Clean up his or her waste.

10. Resist the temptation to let your pet put his or her head out the window: Dust particles can lodge in his or her eyes.

With a little extra care and planning, travelling with your pet can be an enjoyable experience for everyone.
